Chapter 7

Avi’s wedding day! “Are you okay?” Chloe asked, looking intently at her best friend.

Avi’s eyes misted, but she blinked back the tears and nodded bravely. “Yes. This is going to be good. A good day.”

Chloe hugged her friend from behind. “You look beautiful, by the way.” Her long, white dress shimmered as she moved. And because Avi was rarely, if ever, still, she was a shimmering, exotic woman fighting back the tears of panic on her wedding day.

“You seemed to be much more in control last night,” Chloe offered.

Avi nodded. “Yes. Yes, it was better. He laughed at some of my jokes and didn’t…well, he was nice.”

“Good. Focus on the nice!” she urged firmly. “And then bring George and Otis to your new home! He’ll learn to love them just as much as he loves you.”

Avi laughed, but the sound wasn’t merry. Chloe knew Avi was scared.

Chloe didn’t know how to help her friend, so she fell back on a lame hug. “When you come back from your honeymoon,” she said to her friend, their eyes locked in the mirror, “you give me a call when you need me, okay? Call me when you need to talk, night or day!”

Avi nodded, sniffled slightly, then straightened her shoulders. “It’s going to be okay.” She nodded again, more firmly this time. “I’m going to be okay!”

“Yes, you are!” Chloe agreed with feeling.

An hour later, Chloe breathed a sigh of relief. The wedding went off with only a minor hitch when Avi hesitated with her vows. In that moment, Chloe had braced herself, ready to whisk her friend out of the palace and out of the country if she couldn’t go through with the wedding. But in the end, Avi pulled herself up and repeated the vows, binding her life to Lugar and his country.

Chloe watched, her heart aching for her friend. Avi was strong and confident as she walked away from the altar. And if Lugar looked a bit irritated, Chloe didn’t care. Her heart was aching for Avi.

It was her turn to walk down the aisle after the bride and she shifted, her feet hesitating as she looked up at Girad. He offered her his arm and she took it, trembling with the memories from last night. She’d worked hard to ignore her tumultuous feelings over the events of last night. And because of the activities and her concern for Avi all day, she’d been relatively successful.

Until now.

She tightened her hand on Girad’s arm and followed Avi out of the room. The ceremony reminded Chloe so much of a Christian ceremony it was almost eerie, but she had too many other issues to deal with at this particular moment, analyzing the similarities would just have to wait until she was far, far away from here and she could compartmentalize everything and analyze the issues, so she could process each one individually.

Yes, that was her plan. For now, she’d get through the reception. She was leaving tomorrow, heading back to New York City and her real life.
